Along with making great strides toward reaching out to college students coping with the illness or loss of a loved one, David is also strongly striding down the path to become an oncologist and a future leader in public health. To prepare himself for this future career and also to improve his leadership capabilities for AMF, David is studying for a Masters in Public Health at Oxford University, with a focus on developing programs to prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease. |

Fajgenbaum Selected as Finalist for Rhodes Scholarship

Founder and Executive Director, David Fajgenbaum was informed late last week that he had been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Fajgenbaum will travel to Atlanta on the weekend of November 18, where he will be joined by approximately 12 to 14 other finalists for his region (North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia) for a cocktail party and a 20 minute interview. If selected for the Rhodes Scholarship Fajgenbaum plans to study public health at Oxford. |

The National Brain Tumor Foundation and the National Students of AMF Support Network will be presenting a free teleconference on October 3, 2006 at 8:00 PM EST for college students who are coping with cancer in their families while away at school. This one-hour program is free and open to all, and is specifically designed for college-aged students who have a parent or loved one with cancer. After Anne Marie’s death in 2004, Dave returned to campus burdened by grief, but empowered by his desire to fulfill the promise he made to his mom. He started “Students of AMF” as a casual peer support group for grieving students that met every other week. Fajgenbaum described the group’s attitude as, “We’ve lost out loved ones, let’s try to fight back.” |

David Fajgenbaum and Ben Chesson organized the Second Annual "Boot Camp to Beat Cancer" and 5K Family Fun Walk, in partnership with the National Brain Tumor Foundation (NBTF) as part of "A Morning of Fitness" (AMF) in memory of David's mother, Anne Marie Fajgenbaum, who passed away in October 2004. The first time the pair held the "Boot Camp to Beat Cancer," they managed to raise $8,000. This time, they more than doubled their total, raising $20,000. |

Fajgenbaum awarded summer research grant to explore university policies for bereaved students

David Fajgenbaum (NHS '07): This summer Mr. Fajgenbaum will be doing research on the effects of losing a loved one during the college years and what universities are doing to support these grieving college students. The work will involve a review of the literature on mourning, best practices for supporting bereaved students, surveys of university administrators and interviews with experts. David will look at the 31 COFHE (Consortium of Financing Higher Education) institutions and 9 public universities. He expects that this research will have a tremendous impact on addressing grieving college student’s needs by finding the current practices by universities and reporting statistics on the frequency of these programs. |

The Georgetown University football team, like most college football teams, had one day "off" this year. That came on Saturday, October 29, a week after the Hoyas 24-21 come-from-behind win over Fordham on the Washington, DC campus. The Hoyas, however, did anything but take the day "off." Along with other members of the Students of AMF service group, and led by teammate and founder of the group, David Fajgenbaum (N'07), 40 members of the Hoya football team voluntarily woke up at 7 a.m. on a clear and crisp Saturday morning to participate in the Greater Washington Regional Heart Walk. |
